Suvarnabhumi (pronounced su-wan-na-poom) means the Golden Land, the ancient name for old Siam and neighboring Burma, Cambodia and Laos. The name of the airport was bestowed by HM King Bhumipol Adulyadej. The new airport started operations at 0100 hours on 28 September 2006. This map to Suvarnabhumi Airport is aimed at helping visitors using the new airport. Suvarnabhumi International Airport is far bigger than Don Muang airport. The main buildings are 563,000 sq m in area within a land area of 32 sq km. Please give yourself 30 – 40 minutes to walk from the check-in counters to your departure gates.
With effect from 18 April 2007, the public taxi stands will be operating from the arrival terminal at the 2nd level. So will buses picking up passengers.
For independent and budget travelers, there's a free shuttle service to the bus station 10 minutes away where they can take an air-conditioned bus to On Nut or Victory Monument where they can take the Bangkok skytrain.. The planned train service to the city will only be ready in late 2008. This service will end at the Phaya Thai skytrain station. From 1 February 2007 the airport tax was raised from 500 baht to 700 baht. For transit passengers, the Novotel Suvarnabhumi Airport Hotel is linked to the terminal building by a walkway. The colored portions in the map to Suvarnabhumi Airport are the districts in Bangkok. The white portion is Bang Phli district, Samut Prakarn Province. Highway 7 is the Bangkok – Chonburi Highway to leads east and south-east to Chonburi and Pataya.
To the west Highway 7 joins up with Phra Rama IX Road that goes to various parts of the city. The distance from the airport to Phra Rama IX subway station is about 25 km. Lat Krabang Road leads westwards to Sukhumvit Soi 77 that leads to Sukhumvit Road near the On Nut skytrain station. The distance from the airport to On Nut skytrain station is about 15 km.
